Nelson Mandela stepped down from president in 1999. He campaigned against HIV/Aids and then helped his country host the Football World Cup which worked. He was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2001. He then was going to try to not be public for the rest of his life. He wanted to spend the rest of his life in quiet.
Nelson Mandela married Graca Machel on his 80th birthday. He founded a charity called the Mandela Foundation. In 2005, Nelson announced that one of his sons had died of a disease that was related to HIV/Aids. He also formed a group called the Elders. It was a group that was trying to fix some of the world’s biggest problems. As part of the Aids problem, he tried to get South Africans to talk about Aids like a normal disease. Even after he was president, he did some pretty big stuff.
